RIYADH: : Former multiple World Champion Viswanathan Anand of India defeated reigning champion Magnus Carlsen from the black side of Botvinnik system in the Nimzo Indian defence in the ninth round of World Rapid Championship (WRC) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday.
Anand won in 34 moves, thanks to a delectable endgame in which his queen and bishop that controlled the long diagonal proved too powerful.
Anand, Vladimir Kramnik and Wang Hao were among the leaders. Pune’s Eesha Karavade defeated higher-rated Valentina Gunina in the ninth round.
