Vinesh Phogat: The Lesser Known Phogat Sister Proves her Mettle on the World Stage
We have all see Dangal- the movie which made Geeta Phogat and her sister Babita Kumari household names in the country. But there is another Phogat who has achieved what her cousin did 8 years ago. Vinesh Phogat bagged the Gold medal in the women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling competition at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
Born to Rajpal Singh Phogat, Mahavir Singh Phogat’s younger brother, Vinesh took to wrestling after seeing her cousins make the nation proud at international events. It was just a matter of time when she made her name in the sport. The 2018 CWG marked her second gold medal at the Games. Her first one had come in Glasgow 2014 where she had competed in the 48kg category. She had suffered from a gruesome injury in her quarterfinal bout at the Rio Olympics but has come back stronger than ever.
We list down some of her achievements:
- Bronze medal in the women’s freestyle 48 kg category at the 2014 Asian Games.
- Gold medal in the women’s freestyle 48 kg category at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
- Silver medal in the women’s freestyle 51 kg category at the 2013 Commonwealth Wrestling Championships.
- Silver medal at the 2015 Asian Championships in Doha.
With the next Olympics scheduled to be held in Tokyo 2020, there are many expectations from the 23-year-old to bag a Gold for the country for the first time in women’s wrestling.
