Hima Das scripted history for India on Thursday by aiming gold at the 400m race in IAAF World U-20 Athletics Championships in Tampere (Finland). The 18-year-old girl from the remote village in Assam achieved 51.46s personal best timing to win gold at the prestigious tournament. Das’s win triggered nation-wide celebration and social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter were flooded with warm wishes for the young sprinter.

The win was huge for India, as no woman in past was able to accomplish such greatness for India in a World Championship, be it senior, junior or youth level tournament. Not only this, Hima is the only Indian to stand at the first position on the podium at any world level track event.

Das was not in the lead position from the beginning of the race, running on lane no. 4, she was lacking behind Romania’s Andrea Miklos in first few laps. Just a few moments after reaching the final bend, Das produced jolting burst and in few moments she was way ahead than her counterpart to cross the finishing line.

18-year-old Das now stands high amongst the elite athletes club who have achieved astonishing results for India in past editions of the tournament.
