The Big Names who didn’t make it to FIFA World Cup 2018
With only 32 nations taking part in the World Cup finals in Russia, there is bound to be disappointment for some teams with a huge fan following. A total of 210 nations from across the globe took part in the FIFA qualification process. While most of the past winners made it, many had to stay content with being just spectators. We take a look at the most obvious choices who missed the flight to Rio.
This was perhaps the biggest upset of them all. The 4-time World Cup champions lost the deciding qualification match against Sweden 1-0 and failed to book their place in Russia. It came as a major shock to the footballing nation who have appeared in all editions of the tournament except 1958.
The Dutch side were the runners up in South Africa in 2010. But the team has struggled since then. Netherlands finished third in their group, losing to Sweden as well as France and were knocked out of the qualification process. The Orange team will be sorely missed by the crowds who got excited by their bright orange jersey and the chant of the Dutch anthem.

This would be the first time in 3 decades that U.S.A. would not be part of the World Cup. Known as the underdogs, Approaching the last qualifier where even a draw would have helped them qualify for the World Cup, U.S.A. lost 2-1 to Trinidad and Tobago to crash out of the race. Nevertheless, a large number of Americans are expected to arrive in Russia to watch the best footballers in action.
With world class players such as Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal in their ranks, Chile have become a force to reckon with in world football. The Copa America champions finished a lowly sixth in the South American qualifiers and failed to grab a place in the World Cup. The La Roja, as they are famously called, will be missed by many at the World Cup.
