SquashSquash: India set to change its fortunes at the 2018 CWG

Squash is an indoor sport which is labelled as a core sport in the Commonwealth Games. It is mandatory for the host country to include squash in its sporting programme. There have been 6
editions where squash has been included and India has so far managed just 1 medal, a gold in the last edition in 2014.

The team for the 2018 Gold Coast has been announced. There will be 7 athletes taking part, including 5 men and 2 women. Deepika Pallikal, the most well-known of them all, will be
spearheading the women’s singles campaign. She would be partnering with Joshna Chinappa for the women’s doubles event. The duo had won India’s first gold medal in the Glasgow edition. Saurav
Ghosal will take part in the men’s singles event.

While Saurav Ghosal is the World number 14, Deepika Pallikal is currently ranked 19 in the women’s category.

The team is confident despite facing tough competition from Australia, England and Malaysia in various categories. If luck goes their way, the Indian team could well be on their way to a record number of medals at this Commonwealth Games.
