Six records set on opening day

A spate of records towards the fag end enlivened the proceedings on the opening day of the 61st State sub-junior athletics meet at the Chandrasekharan Nair stadium on Thursday.
Heavy rain proved to be a dampener in the morning but it didn’t prevent Ernakulam’s Alex P. Thankachan from setting the first record of the day in discus event in the boys’ under-18 category.
Alex in his first attempt came up with his career-best performance of 53.83m and broke the existing record by around seven metres.
In the rain, P.A. Ahalya also set a new mark in under-16 girls’ discus with an effort of 36.51 in her last attempt.
Four of the six records that were set came in the second session. The stand-out performance came from Ancy Sojan in long jump in the girls’ under-18 category. Ancy erased the longest record from the books while winning the gold with an effort of 5.86.m. The other records were set by Salman Farooq (2000m in boys under-16 category) Adarsh Gopi (1500m in boy’s under-18 category) and Abhinandh Sudaresan (1500m in boy’s under-20 category).
