Shubhankar Sharma puts India on the map at the Hero Indian OpenMarch 10, 2018
The Hero Indian Open is underway in Gurgaon and the tournament which features 39 Indian golfers out of a total pool of 144, is a matter of pride for Indians. The most popular Indian golfing tournament has seen Indians doing fairly well over the last years. However, the story is different in this edition.
Two time defending champion SSP Chawrasia was knocked out of the competition after only two rounds. A total of only 10 have made it to the weekend finals. However, one name on everyone’s lips is Shubhankar Sharma. The 21 year has improved on an average start to reach the last rounds of the tournament.
Sharma executed Birdies in the 17th and 18th hole, a surreal performance given he was five-over after the first nine holes. A win here can help him break into the top 50 rankings of the world. This is after Shubhankar had displayed guts to win 2 European Championships and put up a spectacular display in Mexico where he was leading after 54 holes.
Deservedly, he will become the fourth Indian to play the Augusta Masters tournament in April after, Jeev Milkha Singh, Arjun Atwal and Anirban Lahiri.
