Hyderabad-based Reeds Football Club will be the first Indian side to participate in the mini (under-13) section of the SuperCupNI at Ulster University’s Coleraine campus in Londonderry, Northern Ireland from July 23 to 27.

The tournament, formerly known as the Northern Ireland Milk Cup, groomed since its 1983 inception the budding careers of David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Nobby Stiles, Robbie Savage, Ryan Giggs and Steve McManaman among other renowned footballers.

So have leading clubs such as Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Nottingham Forest, Norwich City, Newcastle United and Dynamo Kiev fielded teams in the youth tournament that features competitions also for boys under-15 and 18.

In the mini category, a dozen sides have been divided into three groups. Reeds FC will face local side Bertie Peacock Youths, Ballinamallard United and Greenisland FC in group B. English Premier League (EPL) squad West Ham United, returning after 2000, has been pitted against home-town outfit Coleraine FC, Dungannon Swifts and Portadown FC in group A.

Two challenges confront Rakesh Attay, director, Reeds FC. “We don’t have a full-fledged goalkeeper in our team. Four in the current squad need funding as will those in the reserves,” he told The Hindu . He has sunk substantial amounts from his pocket in his passion to nurture football talent.

Reeds emerged from the grass-root scheme of Quartz Soccer Club, an All India Football Federation (AIFF) affiliate, Calicut (Kozhikode) A division runner-up and regular in the Kerala Premier League. In 2012-13 Quartz played in the I-League’s second division with 22 players sourced from Reeds.

The five days in Ireland will be packed, with practice games scheduled in between the tournament matches. Undeterred by difficulties, Rakesh hopes that promising players like Nagaraju and Hari will catch the eye of talent scouts from the English and Scottish leagues. As Manager, Attay will be accompanied by four parents including assistant coach Pasupuleti Raju.
