Rajesh Namboodiripad won the men’s title in the IDBI Federal Life Insurance Spice Coast Marathon at the Willingdon Island on Sunday. Shailja Sridhar won the women’s marathon.

Parameshwar the star!

The marathon and its connected shorter runs had some interesting participants. The ultra-marathon couple — Sunil and Sangeeta Shetty — ran a full and half marathon while the 101-year-old Parameshwar, the oldest runner, did the 8km event.

And there was R. Sundaresan, who had set a target of running 50 marathons in 50 weeks in honour of soldiers, doing his 49th event.

There is no prize-money in the Spice Coast Marathon which is basically an amateurs’ event.

Sachin Tendulkar, who flagged off the event, was a huge inspiration for the runners.

The results:

Men: Marathon: 1. Rajesh Namboodiripad (3:15.28s), 2. Mritunjay Kumar (3:15.58), 3. Raghesh Maheshwar (3:25.46).

Half marathon: 1. Soji Mathew (1:16.57), 2. Nijin Ravichandran (1:23.59), 3. Mahesh Shanmugan (1:27.22).
