Punjab girls finished as first runners-up to secure silver medal in the 29th Junior National Baseball Championship held at Ahmadabad in Gujarat from January 27 to 31. Teams from 25 states participated in this championship.

Led by Sandeep Pal of Ludhiana, Punjab team was selected on the basis of players’ performance in the Junior Punjab State Baseball Tournament who attended the preparatory camp held at Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Gill village in Ludhiana district from January 20 to 24, before leaving to Ahmadabad.

In the league matches, Punjab beat Delhi 5-2, blanked Goa 2-0 and got the better of Manipur 3-1 to qualify for the knockout stage.

In the pre-quarterfinal, Punjab warded off stiff resistance from Odisha before coming out triumphant 8-7, but in the quarterfinal, they scripted an easy 7-2 win against Madhya Pradesh.

In the semifinal, Punjab proved too good for Rajasthan as they wrapped up the issue comfortably 8-3 to storm into the final. Anmolpreet Kaur, Krishma, Komaljeet Kaur and Amanjot Kaur contributed two runs each to complete the tally.

In the final, Punjab waged a spirited battle before going down 3-5 against Delhi and had to content with the runners-up trophy.

For Punjab, Amanjot Kaur and Krishma played well, contributing two and one run, respectively.

Sukhdev Singh Aulakh, general secretary of the Punjab Baseball Association and Harbir Singh Gill, president of the Ludhiana District Baseball Association, lauded the girls on bringing fame to the state.
