Priyanka topples Sakshi Chitlange

K. Priyanka (AICF) brought some cheer to the home crowd by defeating top seed Sakshi Chitlange of Maharashtra in the ninth round of the Dr. N. Mahalingam 28th National under-17 open and girls chess championship at the Kumaraguru College of Technology here on Monday.

The Commonwealth under-16 champion, with seven points, now shares the lead with Tarini Goyal of Chandigarh and West Bengal’s Arpita Mukherjee.

In the open category, the top-seeded Erigasi Arjun of Telangana, who struggled early on in the tournament, bounced back in style to oust overnight leader and Statemate R. Raja Rithvik for the joint lead with 7.5 points each.

Arjun sacrificed a pawn and a piece for the mating attack and eventually won in 26 moves.
