National school games kick starts in Ludhiana

The 65th National School Games got off to a colourful start at Guru Nanak Stadium in Ludhiana yesterday. Competition in four disciplines — kickboxing, netball, wushu and sepak takraw — will be held for boys and girls U-14 and U-19 during these six-day games being organised by the Punjab Education Department in which around 1,500 players are taking part.

Vijayinder Singla and Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Punjab Cabinet Ministers, were the chief guests at the opening ceremony. They released balloons to mark the opening of games. 

Before the formal inauguration, players took out a march past, followed by an oath-taking ceremony. The highlight of the opening function was a cultural programme presented by students of different schools.

Addressing the participants, Singla extended warm welcome and wished them a comfortable stay here. He said there were many places of historic importance in the state and anyone wished to visit these places would be provided transportation facilities.

Meanwhile the kick-boxing venue has been shifted to Sangrur and participants are told to reach there today. The players of this game were brought here to participate in the opening ceremony only.
