National School games: Kahvi wins fencing silver

Chandigarh’s Kashvi Garg won a silver medal on the opening day of the 65th National School Games Under-19 fencing tournament at the Sector 43 sports complex in Chandigarh.
Kashvi, who at 14 years is one of the youngest participants in the championship, finished second in girls’ epee category. Kashvi, a Class 9 student at Carmel Convent School, won 10-1 in her quarterfinals match and 15-9 in the semifinals, but lost 8-15 in the final to Khushi from Madhya Pradesh. Kerala’s Ance Mary and Punjab’s Ananya won bronze. In the girls’ foil event, Kerala’s Joy Sahita and VP Kangalakshmi won gold and silver, respectively. Punjab’s Shubhpreet and Tamil Nadu’s R Poonguzhali won bronze.
The Chandigarh teams stormed into the semifinals of the 65th National School Games under-19 fencing tournament. While the boys’ team beat Maharashtra 6-1, the girls’ team beat Goa 7-2 in the quarterfinals. For the boys’ team, Vijay and Suraj scored two runs each. In the girls’ match, Muskan and Tanvi scored two runs each for Chandigarh. In the other boys’ quarterfinals, Chhattisgarh beat Andhra Pradesh 13-1, Madhya Pradesh beat Punjab 6-1, while Delhi blanked Haryana 10-0.
In the other girls’ quarterfinals, Chhattisgarh beat Kerala 6-2, Delhi blanked Haryana 16-0 and Maharashtra hammered Vidya Bharti 10-0.
