Minerva Punjab won its first I-league title on Thursday, beating the well-known Churchill Brothers 1-0 in the last league match of the season. The team from Punjab needed a win to make it to the top of the I-League and they delivered just that. The I-League is India’s premier football competition and the winners represent the country in the AFC championship.

Goans sides have traditionally dominated the event but Minerva Punjab became the first side from the northern part of the country to clinch the title. Going into the last match day of the competition, 4 teams were still in contention to win the I-league. It took a 16th minute pass from William who converted from point blank range to make history.

Churchill Brothers did try their best to avert an unlikely victory, however their shots were blocked from the energetic goalkeeper. This makes it the second time in two years that underdogs have stood on top after Aizawl F.C. heroics last year. The Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula went berserk seeing their side lift the cup.
