Krishan-Sushant win junior national title in Chennai

Krishan Hooda and Sushant Dabas beat Ajay Malik and Madhwin Kamath in straight sets to clinch the boys’ doubles title at the MCC Adidas Nationals Junior (U-18) Tennis Tournament in Chennai today. The top seeds won 7-5 6-4.
Hooda though went down to Kerala’s Akhilendran Indrabalan in the boys’ singles competition. The fourth seed lost 6-7 4-6 in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
Chandigarh’s Uddayvir Singh also succumbed in the quarterfinals. The 11th seed went down 5-7 3-6 to Arjun Sriram.
It was a bad day for fancied players as the top three seeds in the girls’ category were also sent packing. Rashmikaa Shrivalli Bhamidipaty of Telangana stunned top seed Salsa Aher of Maharashtra 6-2 7-5, while unseeded Reshma M of Karnataka defeated second seed Kashish Bhatia of Delhi 6-1 2-6 6-2. Third seed Vanshika Choudhary of Uttar Pradesh lost 6-4 2-6 7-5 to Punjab’s Sarah Dev in the quarterfinals.
Kaavya Sawhney, also from Uttar Pradesh, survived the seed-bashing, as she eased past Karnataka’s Vanshita Pathania 6-4 6-2. However, the fourth seed lost 2-6 1-6 to Reshma Maruri of Karnataka in the semifinals on Friday.
Sarah also bowed out of the championship as she fell 3-6 5-7 to Telangana’s Rashmikaa Shrivalli Bhamidipaty in the last-four contest.
Kaavya, meanwhile, combined with Salsa to win the girls’ doubles title. The duo ousted Kashish Bhatia and Bela Tamhankar 6-2 6-2 in the final on Friday.
