Karanveer Singh and Harmanjot Singh, both students of Government Model Secondary School, Cemetery Road, near Fountain Chowk, hogged the limelight as the duo won gold medals in weightlifting in the Ludhiana District School Games in their respective weight categories.

They proved their mettle by clinching top honours in these games organised by the Punjab Education Department in Khanna.

Karanveer secured a gold medal in the below-96-kg weight category. He lifted total 155 kg (85-kg clean and jerk, while 70-kg snatch), whereas Harmanjot gave a matching performance in the below-73-kg weight section. His attempt of total 155 kg (85-kg clean and jerk, while 70-kg snatch) fetched him a gold medal.

Both trainees joined the Ludhiana Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Club less than a year ago, where Parvesh Chander Sharma, winner of gold medal thrice at Auckland Commonwealth Games, imparts coaching. An elated coach said: “The boys picked up in a very short period. They are hard working, punctual and set to hoist the national flag in international competitions in the near future.” Principal Tasqeen Akhtar appreciated the students’ achievement. He exuded confidence that they would continue to perform well and set an example for others to follow. She also congratulated sports in charge Gurmeet Singh Sodhi on this feat.
