Chandril-Lakshit pair enters summit clash
Qualifier Arjun Kadhe covered the court well and played some solid strokes when it mattered to dispatch second seed Colin Van Beem of the Netherlands 6-4, 7-6 (4) in a men’s singles quarterfinal clash of the $15,000 LMW-ITF Futures here on Thursday.
The 23-year-old Arjun has been working hard on his game for sometime now and was duly rewarded with a big catch today. It was not easy though for this Business Management and Marketing graduate from US. He had to sweat from the start.
In the first set, Van Beem packed much strength into his serves and so did Arjun in his own might. Both players held their serves and just when it looked to go the tie-breaker way, the latter took some chances at the net and hit some lovely winners to wrap up the set 6-4.
In the second, Van Beem played it safe while Arjun kept visiting the net. He further doubled his efforts with some stinging serves and, it did a world of good him in the tie-breaker.
He did not celebrate after beating the seeded star. “Seeds do not matter for me because I know the level of tennis I play,” said the young man from Pune.
France’s Clement Larriere has never gone past a quarterfinal. He had been there five times and had failed on all occasions. This time around he was confident of turning the table in his favour. But Aryan Goveas cut short his journey once again defeating the Frenchman 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-6(1).
Later in the day, the top seeded pair of Chandril Sood and Lakshit Sood scored a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 win over Mohit Mayur and Kaza Vinayak Sharma for a place in the doubles final.
The results: Quarterfinals: Sasi Kumar Mukund bt Cameron Silverman 6-4, 6-1; Arjun Kadhe bt Colin van Beem (Ned) 6-4, 7-6(4); Cing-Yang Meng (Tpe) bt Jui-Chen Hung (Tpe) 6-4, 3-6, 6-3; Aryan Goveas bt Clement Larriere (Fra) 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-6(1).
