IWF World Championships 2021: Manipur’s Bindyarani Wins Gold

Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam, an Indian weightlifter, won gold in the clean and jerk event at the World Weightlifting Championships 2021 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Bindyarani Devi, 22, won at the world meet after lifting an 114kg clean and jerk in the 55kg women’s category. She also lifted 84kg in the snatch for a total of 198kg, putting her in fourth place overall. Devi also won silver at the Commonwealth Championships 2021.
Adijat Olarinoye of Nigeria took the place with a total effort of 203kg (90+113).
Ghofrane Belkhir of Tunisia won gold in snatch with a 92kg lift and also took first place in the combined leaderboard with a total effort of 203kg (92+111). Adijat Olarinoye of Nigeria earned overall silver (203kg), while Svitlana Samuliak of Slovakia took bronze (201kg).
Bindyarani, a Manipur native, has been named as ‘Mirabai 2.0’ in the past. Bindyarani and Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu share many parallels, including coming from comparable backgrounds and belonging to the same state and club. Mirabai may not be competing in the World Championships this year, but her club-mate has assured that the Indian team does not go home empty-handed.
