1913 recorded the first instance of cricket being played by women in India. The Indian eves participated in the first world cup in 1973, two years before the men. However, it was only in 2018 that they bagged their first annual retainer contracts. Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana will earn 50 lakhs per year for their services to Indian cricket. They surpass England and Australia as the highest paid female cricketers on the planet.

The reason was simple. “The girls are doing well, we need to recognise them, give them the comfort and security levels ” said Diana Edulji, former India captain. The team had played the final in the 2017 World Cup. They have improved their game in all departments. There are more series, more matches happening now than ever before. This is the why the retainers are justified.

The B.C.C.I. has also decided to broadcast all international games on home soil. The media rights which were sold in September 2017 included the women’s games as well. This is definitely a step in the right direction.
