Opener Mithali Raj’s unbeaten 97 (69 balls, 13×4, 1×6) followed by medium pacer Pooja Vastrakar’s three for 6 helped India register a resounding 142-run victory over host Malaysia in its women’s T20 Asia Cup cricket opener here on Sunday.
After putting up 169 runs on the board, the Indian bowlers bundled out the home team for just 27 runs in 13.4 overs with six Malaysian batswomen scoring a duck!
Opting to bat, the women in blue began the proceedings on a shaky note, losing opener Smriti Mandhana (2) and Vastrakar (16) for just 35 runs in 6.1 overs.
However, Mithali kept one end safe and forged a crucial 86-run partnership for the third wicket with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (35, 23 balls) to take her side past the 100-run mark.
After Harmanpreet fell in the 15th over, Deepti Sharma chipped in with an unbeaten 18 runs to help India reach 169.
Disastrous start
In reply, Malaysia was off to a disastrous start as it host lost half the side within the first five overs with the score at just 12. Captain Winifred Duraisingam, Sasha Azmi and Zumika Azmi tried their best to put up some resistance before succumbing to the experienced Indian bowling attack.
The scores: India 169 for three (Mithali Raj 97 n.o, Harmanpreet Kaur 32) bt Malaysia 27 in 13.4 overs Pooja Vastrakar three for 6, Poonam Yadav two for 0, Anuja Patil two for nine).
