India creates history as it wins Mixed Team Badminton Gold

Saina Nehwal brushed aside her opponent Malaysia’s Cheah 21-11, 19-21, 21-9 to complete a 3-1 win in the mixed team gold medal match at the Commonwealth Games 2018.This is the first time India has won the gold in this event. The team had beaten Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Scotland, Mauritius and Singapore in route to the finals.

Earlier, Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa beat Peng Soon Chan and Liu Ying Goh 21-14, 15-21, 21-15 in the first match-up. This was followed by a dramatic victory by Kidambi Srikanth over three-time Olympic silver medallist Lee Chong Wei, which the Indian shuttler took 21-17, 21-14. Although India lost in the doubles match- pair of Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost 15-21, 20-22 to V Shem Goh and Wee Kiong Tan, Nehwal’s victory was enough to seal it for the Indians.
