Historic twin titles for Rohan; Gaurav triumphs in State Junior badmintonJuly 15, 2018
Rohan Gurbani created history in the first Maharashtra Junior State Selection Badminton tournament, organized by the Nanded City and District Badminton Association, which concluded at the Yashvant College Sports Complex in Nanded on Saturday.
The 15-year-old bagged twin titles by emerging champion in the U-17 boys singles and U-19 boys singles. He then won the U-17 boys singles summit clash without breaking much of a sweat. Top seed Rohan crushed Varun, a trainee of Nikhil Kanetkar Badminton Academy, in just 19 minutes. Rohan dominated from the start and registered a quick-fire 21-5, 21-14 win.
After a couple of hours break, Rohan against made the light work of Varun in the U-19 singles final. Although, Varun put up a better fight in the second final he could not stop his rampaging opponent. Fourth seed Rohan recorded a thumping 21-16, 21-15 win to complete a historic double.
Earlier, Rohan’s former practice partner Gaurav Mithe triumphed in the U-19 boys doubles final. Gaurav and his new partner Ajinkya Patharkar (Nashik) overcame a tough start to down Pune duo of Soham Patil and Tejas Deo 22-20, 21-14. It was first state title for Gaurav and Ajinkya. Gaurav, a student of Hislop College, trains at the Ajay Dayal Badminton Academy.
A jubilant Rohan dedicated his double crown to his parents – Ravi and Sakshi Gurbani and coaches at the PPBA.
“I am very happy with today’s results. Winning two singles titles in the state tournament is a big achievement. Last year in Nagpur, I missed double crown as I lost in the U-19 final. In fact, Nanded is always lucky for me. I remember four years ago, I won the U-13 title in Nanded. I hope to continue good form in future,” Rohan told TOI from Nanded.
Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan was the chief guest and distributed the prizes. Maharashtra Badminton Association vice-presidents Pradeep Gandhe, Ashish Bajpai, Mahesh Wakradkar, chief referee of the tournament Rahul Deshmukh and other MBA officials were present on the occasion.
