Eshita Raju Kalidindi clinched bronze in the under-19 section of the Ukraine junior international badminton tournament at Dnipro (Ukraine) over the weekend.

Eshita lost to eventual winner Maria Delcheva 21-12, 6-21, 13-21 in the semifinals. The student of Suchitra Academy, Secunderabad, was the lone shuttler in the entire competition to stretch the world No. 15 from Bulgaria to three sets.

This was the 15-year-old’s fourth international medal in three months, having won two doubles titles in Russia and Mongolia and finishing singles runner-up in the latter event.

Coached by Indonesian Yousuf Jauhari and Satyam, Eshita’s smashes and half smashes are her strength, bolstered by high fitness levels. Thanks to a scientific training regimen at Suchitra Academy, which has a gym, a swimming pool, an ice bath and an accomplished physiotherapy wing, she’s combat-ready for international competition almost at all times.

Srikanth, her strength and conditioning coach, travels with her often, ensuring she’s injury-free. Two three-hour on-court sessions in the morning and evening, six days a week, have been sharpened by tips from P.V. Sindhu, who’s her role model.
