Basketball could spring a surprise for India at CWG 2018
March 19, 2018, Greater Noida
India is by no way a powerhouse in world basketball. With a world ranking of 62, the country is still taking minor steps in the development of the sport at the grassroots level. The first Fédération internationale de basket-ball (FIBA) recently launched its first Basketball academy in India in Greater Noida.
However, the Commonwealth games provide an opportunity for India to showcase its talent on the world stage. It is only the 2nd time that Basketball is featuring on the world stage. With 2 gold medals on offer both in the men’s and the women’s category, India would be keeping its hopes high for a medal finish in at least one.
In the men’s phase, there are 5 teams which are ranked higher than India- Australia, Nigeria, New Zealand, Canada and Cameroon. While in the women’s tournament, there are 6 competitors which supersede India’s ranking of 40.- Australia, Canada, Jamaica, England, Mozambique and New Zealand.
All teams will play 3 matches in the group stage, followed by the knockout matches. The matches are being staged in Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre, Townsville and Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, Gold Coast.
