Badminton World Junior Championships: Lakshya Sen loses to Kodai Naraoka, bows out in quarter-finalsOctober 20, 2017
Junior world No. 2 Lakshya Sen bowed out of the Junior World Championships losing to Japanese sixth seed Kodai Naraoka 21-14, 17-21, 14-21 in the men’s singles quarter-finals in badminton World Junior Championships in Indonesia on Friday.
16-year-old Lakshya fought for an hour and 6 minutes but the Japanese triggered late in the match and trumped the Indian in rallies to march into the semi-finals of the tournament.
Lakshya played a dominating first game where he scored five consecutive points compared to just two by Naraoka and won the game in just a single game point. From the second game onwards, Naraoka took control of the match and played better rallies.
Even though Lakshya fought off one game point in the second game and three in the third game, it didn’t prove to be enough.
Lakshya was the last Indian in the fray. 14-year-old Gayatri Gopichand Pullela, daughter of chief national coach Pullela Gopichand lost 7-21, 11-21 in the women’s singles pre-quarterfinals to sixth seed Chinese Cai Yanyan.
13th seed Kartikey Gulshan Kumar also went down fighting 21-18, 15-21, 13-21 in the men’s singles pre-quarterfinals against eighth seed Nhat Nguyen.
