The fans who came to see the Federation Cup in Patiala were in shock on the concluding day of the meet. Tamil Nadu speedster Ayyasamy Dharun smashed the national record in the 400m hurdles event on his way to booking a ticket to the Gold Coast. The 21-year-old posted a timing of 49.45s, beating the 11-year-old record set by Joseph Abraham (49.51s).

“I don’t know how it happened. I wasn’t taking much load on myself and was trying to run casually, but ended up breaking a record. I am really pleased,” said Dharun. What is even more surprising to know is that he had been bed ridden for more than a week prior to the feat. He was taken care by his fellow sprinters in his accommodation. This presents a stark reality of the gruesome condition even top athletes face in India.

India’s sporting fans will be hoping for a medal from India’s newest superstar in April.
