Australian Open: Wawrinka edges Medvedev in a thriller; Thiem marches on; Halep & Muguruza cruises

  • Former Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka dug deep to come from behind in five intense sets and stun the world number four Daniil Medvedev by  6-2, 2-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7/2), 6-2. It set up a last-eight clash with either Russian 17th seed Andrey Rublev or German seventh seed Alexander Zverev.
  • Thiem has long had the measure of Monfils, winning all five of their previous encounters, and the 10th seed had no answers on a hot Melbourne day, making 32 unforced errors. Dominic Thiem (AUT x5) bt Gael Monfils (FRA x10) 6-2, 6-4, 6-4
  • Two-time Grand Slam champions Halep defeated 16th seed Elise Mertens 6-4, 6-4 while Muguruza knocked out ninth seed Kiki Bertens 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets.
