All eyes will be on India’s female recurve archers as they take aim in the Asian Championship which begins in Bangkok on Monday. The continental competition is hugely significant as it will serve as an Olympic qualifier event.

With the men’s side having already secured berths for the 2020 Tokyo Games at the World Championships in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands, four months ago, the onus will be on the women to claim quota places.

The Bangkok event will provide only individual and not team quota, but the Indian women have a chance to win the maximum three individual quota places.

Interestingly, ace archer Deepika Kumari will miss out on a shot at claiming a Tokyo berth despite being a part of the four-member Indian squad. Only the top three archers of the recently-concluded selection trials are eligible to take part in the Olympic qualification event which will be held after the main tournament.
