The second-ranked Indian compound mixed team, comprising Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Ojas Deotale, performed creditably to reach the final, while 21-year-old recurve archer B. Dhiraj upset some seasoned rivals to enter the men’s individual semifinals at the Archery World Cup Stage-1 in Antalya on Friday.
Having booked a berth in the women’s individual semifinals, Jyothi combined with Deotale to help India, which received a bye, beat Luxembourg 159-157, France 159-156 and Malaysia 157-155 to set up a summit clash with Chinese Taipei.
In recurve competitions, three Indian archers displayed fine performances.
Dhiraj, ranked 15 th, defeated Germany’s Theo Carbonetti 6-0, Switzerland’s Keziah Chabin 6-4 and Slovakia’s Ziga Ravnikar 6-4 before stunning World and Olympic medallist and second-seeded American Brady Ellison 6-5 (10*-10) by shooting closer to the centre in the shoot-off and three-time Olympian compatriot Tarundeep Rai 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
Dhiraj will meet sixth-placed Moldovan Dan Olaru in the last-four.
Tarundeep went past Ukrainian Viktor Ruban 6-0, Indonesian Alviyanto Prastyadi 6-5 (9*-9), Japanese Fumiya Saito 7-3 and Mexican Matias Grande, who ousted Neeraj Chauhan 6-0 in the opening round, 6-5 (9-7) before exiting in the quarterfinals.
Fourth-ranked Atanu Das beat Puerto Rico’s Adrian Munoz 6-0, Luxembourg’s Jeff Henckels 7-1 and Bangladesh’s Mohammad Sagor Islam 6-2. He lost 3-7 to China’s Xiangshuo Qi.
In the women’s section, Bhajan Kaur toppled three opponents, including top-ranked World and Olympic medallist Alejandra Valencia 6-5 (10-9). She was beaten 6-2 by China’s Muyan Qui.
Ankita Bhakat’s journey ended in the third round, while Simranjeet Kaur and Aditi Jaiswal lost in the first round.
