Three students from Guru Nanak Mission Public School, Dalla, in Bhogpur have won gold medals in the Punjab Athletics Open Championship that was held in Sangrur. In total, six gold and a bronze medal have been won by Chanveer Kaur, Satnam Singh and Manjot Singh.
City’s golden girl among winners
While Chanveer has won a gold in 100 m, 200 m and medley race each, Satnam has won two gold and a bronze in 200 m, medley race and 100 m race, respectively, while Manjot has won a gold in 800 m. Chanveer is also known as the city’s golden girl since she appeared first in the Khelo India School Games. She had bagged the first position in 200 m and completed her race in 24.69 seconds.
Their coach Swaran Singh said Chanveer had made a new national-level record. “Earlier, the record in the event was of 24.78 seconds,” he said.
Chanveer’s father stays in Italy. Life has not been too easy for her as she, along with her mother, is staying with her relatives.
Now, she is going to Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala for a national-level camp that will be held for those players who had won medals in the Khelo India games.
“Those who have performed well in the Khelo India games have been called to the camp and she is now aiming to play for the country in world championships,” Swaran said.
The coach said Principal of the school Bikram Singh Saini had been helping them a lot. “He is the one that provide us everything whatever we ask for,” the coach said.
