Sitar a popular plucked string instrument is said to have been modulated from veena, a three stringed instrument and dates back to the Mughal Period in India.

Considered to be a traditional instrument of India for the western world,  there are no historical facts to support who invented Sitar rather there are various theories regarding the same.

First theory has it , that it was Amir Khusruo who had invented Sitar. Amir Khusruo lived in the 13th century and sitar is said to have been non- existent till then so it could be a fakir Amir Khusruo who had evolved the Sitar from Persian Sehtar in the 18th century.

Second is that it was evolved from Rudra Veena. But the different materials used in their compositions dismisses this theory comfortably.

Then another theory states that it evolved from Saraswati Veena, which could be have been validated had we more information on Saraswati Veena itself.

  1. Can you please tell me what is the difference between Sitar and Veena?
  2. Yes Sure.Sitar and Veena are both stringed instruments of India. They are different in terms of their making, the style of play and the like. The veena is mostly used in Carnatic music recitals whereas, Sitar is mostly used in Hindustani music recitals. Both the instruments look almost alike by the inclusion of a long hollow neck and a gourd resonating chamber
