The All India Kabaddi Federation (AIKF) was founded in 1950. AIKF was responsible for promoting and publicising the game. However, it was in 1972 when Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) was founded with the sole aim to promote kabaddi in the neighbouring countries of India, to which they were quite successful, paving way for the 1st Asian Championship in 1980 where countries like Japan, Nepal, Malaysia and Bangladesh participated, with India being the champion of the tournament.
