What is the right age to make my child sleep in a separate room or bed? How do I encourage my child to do so?
Making your child sleep in another room is a major decision as it is the first step towards their confidence boost and independence. Most children repel the idea of sleeping alone but if tackled tactfully they might be maneuvered into sleeping in their own room.
The western cultures recommend sleeping of the child separately from a very young age say around 3 years but in India the right age preferably is 5-7 years depending on the personal criterion of the parents.
The process should be a very gradual one with no pressure on the child. Certain tricks that can induce the child to do so could be-
Build enthusiasm – Try building excitement in the child about his own room, own bed. Try to make the child feel like he/she would be entering into a magical world of being on their own when they start sleeping separately.
Fancy up the room – Make your child’s room just the way they want it to be. Go shopping with them and buy teddy, toys, racks whatever they want in their room to make it cozy and as per your child’s choice.
Let it be a natural process – Let your child face his/ her fears gradually. Do not be strict rather adhere to your child’s whims in the initial stage. Give them confidence that you are just within reach if they need you.
Boost up courage – Try putting your child to bed with simple and courageous stories that make him/ her feel as if they are doing something wonderful by sleeping separately from their parents.
Listen to your intuition – Every child is different and unique. Listen to your own intuitions regarding the needs of your child and rather than following set rules, create ones that are comfortable for your child.
