What is the most important skill to become a good Mridangam player?
Mridangam, a difficult percussion instrument is an accompaniment in all Carnatic Music ensemble. It produces unique and melodious tones and therefore is known as King of Percussion or Queen of Melodies.
Though it is spontaneous and silent expression of the heart, to master it one must learn under a qualified Guru with diligence and perseverance.
Percussionists require a blend of many skills imbedded together to bring out a fine performance but the most important skill that is essentially required by a Mridangam layer is his skill of fingering technique.
It is all a matter of how the hand and fingers are played upon Mridangam to bring out the unique tones. Without proper wrist control and fingering technique it is not possible and the tones that come out may seem faulty or out of tune.
Even though this is an important skill, it is essential to work on all the aspects of learning the instrument because just by one skill and lacking in another you will not be able to master the instrument.
