Chiaroscuro is derived from an Italian word which signifies ‘Light- Dark’. It is a technique that is used in paintings to create illusionary three dimensions on two dimensional objects with the help of light and dark application of tones and shades highlight.

To simply put it, Chiaroscuro is the technique of light and shade on a pictorial representation to bring out contrast and interplay which can relate to moods and characters too, thus keeping some part in veils and some in lights.

Famous artists who distinctively have Chiaroscuro mark on their paintings are Leonardo  Da Vinci and Caravaggio.
