Format Sensor refers to the image area on the sensor in a Digital SLR. It comes as DX Format Sensor and FX Format Sensor.

DX is the smaller image area in the sensor measuring 24x16mm whereas the FX is the bigger area measuring 36x24mm.

In simple terms difference between DX and FX is that whereas DX is not ideal for wide angle photography as area covered is narrow, FX is optimum for the same.

DX is 2/3rd the size of 35mm cameras whereas FX is the exact same size of 35mm cameras.
