The first drum, or the smaller one is known as Dayan and played with the dominant hand. It is cylindrical in shape and made out of wood. The skin on the drum is stretched and tightened to ensure that it produces a distinct pitch when touched from different angles. Bayan is the low pitched and has a shape similar to that of a bowl. This one has a metal shell. What differentiates the two drums is the fact that the larger one has a membrane looser than that of the Dayan, which allows the player to manipulate the pitch and go spontaneous during a performance.
