How can I make our own Compost at Home?
Compost is the manure that is recycled from the waste of nature itself like leaves, fruits, dead animals etc to enrich the soil and provide nutrients.
To make compost at home there are certain prerequisites that you will have to take care of-
- Every compost that is made requires air, moisture, carbon which comes in the form of dead leaves, newspapers, branches and twigs and nitrogen which is ensured by grass clippings, fruits and vegetable scraps and coffee grounds. Materials that are enriched with carbon should be more than nitrogen.
- You can start composting at home by looking for a shady corner in your garden where there is easy availability of water. Then make a pile by adding all your kitchen waste, dead leaves, twigs, branches, grass clippings, poop, dung, newspapers or basically anything and everything you can get your hands on from the kitchen or garden. Then make your pile damp by putting in water.
- Once the ingredients in the compost pile start decomposing you will know yourself because the color will start to change along with odor. Keep on adding waste weekly and turning it around with a pitchfork to enable aeration.
- Once you cannot recognize anything that you have put in the pile individually and when the material become dark and rich in color, your compost is ready to be used
